    • Bill Gates Tells NVTC About Major Software Advances Coming in Future - Potomac Tech Wire, March 13, 2008

Washington, DC -- Bill Gates, the chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft, told over 1,000 attendees at a Northern Virginia Technology Council breakfast on Thursday that the next decade will be as significant as the last two decades in terms of software and technology developments, with "no slowdown at all." Gates, who will step down from his day-to-day role at Microsoft this year to work at his multi-billion dollar Gates Foundation, said he sees major innovation coming in the areas of television, digital video, tablet devices, 3D products, speech controls, computer vision devices, simulation applications and "natural interfaces" that will allow users to access information on a wide variety of devices. "The number of engineers working on these areas is larger than ever," he said. "I hope you get a sense of my optimism." Gates, who is currently transitioning from his day-to-day role at Microsoft, said that his foundation will continue to focus on preventable and treatable diseases in the developing world, including malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and early-childhood disease. "We can make quite rapid progress in these areas," he said. He also called for the federal government to release more visas for skilled foreigners studying in the U.S., along with greater government funding for math, science and engineering.
